What should I do as my next step?

Stick around and become chief of your section, then worry about it from there.

Current AUSA, thinking about next steps

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Jun 17, 2023 3:59 pm

I'm a line AUSA in a secondary market that borders a big market (think Sacramento to SF, Baltimore to DC, Trenton to NY, Wilmington to Philly). I have been here for 3 years, 7 years in biglaw in the bigger city before that, 2 year clerkship before that.

My long term goal is to return to the bigger city in private practice. Not necessarily big law but definitelty in private practice (maybe a boutqiue).

I'm doing really well here and I think I'm going to be chief of my section in the next 2-3 years. I'm not in white collar but my cases are complex and not just guns/drugs. I also think I could "transfer" to the USAO in the big city as a white collar prosecutor. I'd be a strong candidate but the downside would be that I'd probably continue to be a line AUSA for awhile longer. I've also considered going to main justice as a trial attorney -- either a branch office or in DC.

What does TLS think I should do?
