2023 Pre-OCI Megathread

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Jun 07, 2023 10:18 pm

Thought I'd add a thread to post pre-OCI happenings/timelines/advice.

I'll start - have a Weil NYC callback coming up next week, applied 6/3.

When did you get the callback invite?

Can we throw down some super general parameters on applicant characteristics like school range and grade range? Would be helpful to see where firms are looking since pre-OCI is crazy opaque

This is OP - touch above median at a lower T14. Got the CB invite 6/7.

Is Pre-OCI a waste of time for me? T25, well above median but school doesn't rank. I know I'm not top 10% though (which is the only rankings "band" provided). Trying to leverage networking but wondering if cold applying is worth the time.

Interested in NYC and Dallas/Houston, have strong ties to all. Just don't know if or where I'd be competitive since i'm first gen/CDO tries to funnel people in regular OCI so isn't helpful.

Yes, do pre-OCI. You might be able to apply via diversity apps too if you have a compelling first gen story. I think people should think of OCI now as the backup plan, not the main event (based on my experience as a rising 3L). Think of it as where you get to talk to firms you didn’t get responses to via online apps if you still want to. I know people who struck out last year because they didn’t do pre-OCI and it will be even more common this year for people who are not proactive about the process.

Exactly right. OCI is the after-party, and pre-OCI is the party. Times have changed.

As someone who graduated this year and secured 1L and 2L SA positions at different firms exclusively through pre-OCI, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't apply pre-OCI. It seems that OCI now is the backup option in case you don't secure something during pre-OCI (and note that the backup option will be significantly limited because so many firms are filling up their incoming classes before OCI even starts).

It sucks but the entire schedule for hiring has gone out the window for the most part. You need to be applying now to secure SA for next summer.

Is DC moving particularly slowly? or does it usually lag behind NYC?

Congrats on the offers! By the same timeline, do you mean that you interviewed with Milbank on Monday as well?

How long has it taken for firms to offer callbacks after screeners? (For example: Cravath, Skadden, Wachtell)
