Unemployed - should i try to negotiate offer I have?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue May 16, 2023 1:17 am

I've been a practicing lawyer since 2020 but took the last year off to coach professional tennis abroad. Due to some instability in the country where I have been working, I need to return to the United States and find a job ASAP.

I have an offer for 100k + a 45% performance bonus from a solo practitioner in Philadelphia.

Should I try to negotiate a better offer, or given my lack of leverage, should I just accept?

I think it’s low risk if you ask politely and ask once.

Seems a bit risky for one in need of employment ASAP. Might be better to renegotiate after working for a year.

Personally, I'd take the job and then push for a raise etc. after a year. The odds that polite negotiation would cause a problem are close to zero, but still higher than I'd personally be comfortable with.

I’m a small firm owner in Philly if you want to hit me up. Feel free to dm. But that sounds like a generous offer imo.
