How does 3L recruiting work
T14 2L with good grades and competitive federal government litigation internship lined up for summer. In the case clerkship apps don’t work out, how does 3L recruiting work? What is the timeline? Not willing to do most transactional but could do regulatory. No one at my school thinks highly of the career office so not willing to trust them on past experiences

There is no timeline because it's off the regular pipeline. You should start applying as broadly as you can starting around May or June and until you either get a job or graduate. You may see job postings on firm websites and symplicity but you should still be networking and applying to other firms.
3L recruiting is based on specific practice group needs. Maybe the current summer crop selected for M&A and they need finance. Maybe they expect bankruptcy to grow. Maybe too many students accepted clerkships. As it looks like right now, firms are not eager to hire but it's impossible to know if this changes between now and when you graduate.
Be prepared to explain why and how you ended up in this position (did you do OCI? Strike out? Either way, come up with a quick and honestish answer that doesn't include more negative energy than necessary). And if you have anything to fix such as poor interviewing, fix it now (ask me how I know).

Can you tell me how one can answer how one landed in this position? The honest answer is I struck out in the 2L Recruit. I had 5 OCIs, 2 CBs, none materialized and I struck out. I will be working this summer with a public office, with no intention of going back full time. I want to apply for 3L recruit and wonder what the best answer would be so I don't look undesirable. Also, did a year long clinic in VC/ Emerging Growth for credits with a supervising law firm which started in 1L summer and would end with 2L finals.
