Emailing GCs of companies that have not posted that they are hiring legal interns?

Post by lucky4884 » Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:44 pm

Has anyone ever cold-emailed a GC of a company that has not published anything about hiring legal interns? If so, does anyone have any advice regarding what to say?

I would literally work at any of the companies whose GCs I want to email for the summer for free, but I was told that for-profit corporations (as opposed to non-profits) have trouble hiring 1Ls and not playing them due to the FLSA. ):

Yea worked very well! I got a fortune 100 like this. In house gores late so send many apps out. Utilize linkedin as well (have a picture up there) and mesg the most powerful from each company, hedge fund or sports team. Be creative. They pay in the 40 per hour range so worth a little risk here!

Before you spam GCs, I'd first look at companies that have publicized programs for this (there are a few) and make sure you are applying through the proper channels (such as they exist).

Take this w/ a grain of salt as my experience is now from more than a decade ago.

During the GFC, I cold-emailed roughly 25 or so legal departments in the area which did not have public legal intern postings.

I had 2 positive responses, and both were from attorneys who were in satellite offices of megacorps (and therefore would be grateful for help since they were essentially the sole lawyer for their offices). I ended up taking an offer for a posted position, but that could be one strategy you could try.

Would you mind expanding on what you mean by be creative - perhaps some examples of what you did?
