Stay or Leave?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Nov 14, 2022 3:43 pm

I want youuu not to go, but you should. Just a little chill Dave Mathews to start things off player.

3d year lit associate at a v100. My hours have been low since I started, and the group keeps shrinking. That has caused things to pick up a bit, but there are still partners in the group that barely have anything going on, and we are not usually slammed. No big cases going on really. Even the senior associates barely made hours last year or weren’t even close. I was not close either.

I’m working with a recruiter now because I feel like maybe I should lateral before reviews, as I feel like it is 50/50 that I will get canned. With that said, there are only three other associates in my group, so maybe they need me-ish. And I don’t want to leave with the impression on others that I was just slow for three years and then bounced with the firm never really recouping on its investment in me. I feel some sense of owing something to the firm. I like everyone I work with for the most part but feel like it may be harder to find a new job after getting fired then if I search for one while still in good standing. Thoughts?

I mean this in the nicest way possible but this has to be like the bajillionth post that reads, "Am I naive to feel a sense of loyalty to bosses who will eject me on my butt the moment they no longer think I'm making them money?"

It's a job. They pay you money to make them money. You need to do what's best for you, as they will do for themselves. If that means working with a recruiter to lateral while you're still in good standing, then do that. I don't know your situation exactly, but it sounds like you already know this is the right call.

Yeah, I’m not in the best position to give you advice about this, but you never owe anything to a firm. If it serves your interests to work there, stay. If it doesn’t, leave.

(In this case, especially, the firm has had every opportunity to “recoup their investment in you” (also known as the salary they pay for your labor) and if they haven’t, that’s on them.)

OP here. And it’s fairly obvious that it’s easier to lateral when i don’t have to dance around why I was laid off, assuming that happens?
