Law Firms with Shortest Partnership Tracks?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Nov 09, 2022 2:24 pm

Title says it all. From what I know, Susman has the shortest; clocking in at six years til eligible for partnership (could be as short as four if you clerk for the Supreme Court). Anyone know of any firms with lesser than or equal to tracks?

Worth noting that a lot of the boutiques with short partnership tracks start counting post-clerkship. Since most successful candidates have at least a year or two of clerkship experience, the track isn't necessarily that much shorter from the time of graduation.

Bartlit Beck has promoted some (post-clerkships) in 3 years.

Kirkland, Honigman, and I have heard McDermott (someone else can confirm) do non-equity partners after 6 years. I am sure there are others that do that for non-equity, doubt there are any major firms that do equity partnership in less than 8 years.

Cravath is equity-only and makes partners after 7 years. (My firm also has a 7 year partnership track but that is for non-equity status.)

Doesn't Knobbe have a 6 year partner track as well? They sold that hard on me during interviewing a few years ago and said everything short of "everyone makes it if they want to."

This is dependent on the group. For corporate, you make partner at 7 years (well, plus stub). Tax, Compensation, and T&E people often take 8-10 years. No clue about litigators.

McDermott does its nonequity after 7 years I believe (not 6). I believe Skadden now does counsel after 6 years.

Bartlit Beck is 4.5, which I believe is the shortest of any major firm or boutique

McDermott just prompted class of 2016 to income partner, so its 6th years going on 7th years. Capital partners are usually at least 3 years at the income partner level before eligibility, so about 10 years total

Confirmed MWE still does NEP after 6.

What happens if you don't make it by year 4.5? I see a bunch of 2017 grads who have presumably heard about their election (or non-election) and few beyond (2014, 2016 grads).

Idk, most partners make it at 4.5 but some do later. It’s a very black box firm, you can’t even find their base salary anywhere online (I know it’s well above market but nothing specific).
