During a recent conversation with our group’s dear leader, he mentioned in passing how he’d like me to do a client secondment. He said it could help to solidify certain client relationships and it would be a net benefit to my career, but he also let slip that other law firms have alumni sending them work and he’d like the same to happen for our group. I would note, it was a passing comment in a long conversation and we were also speaking about other lawyers in our group. I also lateraled here a couple of years ago.
Should I take it as a hint that I am gently being squeezed out over the next year or so? Guess I’m wondering if I should hit the pavement for lateral opportunities after bonus season. I’m a senior associate, hours are well above 2000, no work quality issues of which I am aware, very high performance review last year (FWIW), not much of a book of business though. We’ve been on a hiring spree for junior lawyers, and you don’t need to be a neurosurgeon for our group’s work.

I can’t speak to this particular opportunity, but both of the senior associates I knew in my group who did secondments made partner within a few years of coming back. So my instinct wouldn’t be to think he’s squeezing you out, especially if your hours are good for the group.
