I would only apply to firms looking for associates with one year of experience. I've seen people make the jump sooner, and was wondering what the threshold is. Is it a non-negotiable 12 months, or could I get away with like 8-9?
It might be helpful to know some background and the reason you have for moving, assuming you are interested in a fuller response that touches on whether you should move in the first place. In short though, it really depends on the lateral market at the time and what field you are looking to join. If it is a general corporate practice, I assume the lateral market right now is stalled while the financial uncertainty continues. If it is litigation or a specialty, assuming you have a really good reason why you are leaving, are a good interviewer, and apply to the right firm at the right time, it could probably be under a year, although your odds go up if you can make it 1 or 2 years and offer some actual substantive experience.

When the lateral market was red hot, people were lateraling within the first 3-6 months at their firms. Now, you're probably going to have some difficulty finding opportunities to lateral before the first year.
