How necessary is a high-quality printer at home?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Sep 10, 2022 9:12 pm

I currently have a cheap (black and white only) printer with relatively fuzzy resolution (and as a result have only used it when I realllyy needed something physical to read off of). Is it worth upgrading to a high-quality printer?

FWIW, incoming associate for NY BL corporate. Looking to exercise the 2 days WFH policy so going into the office for printing would be a pretty big inconvenience to me (long commute/first-world problem).

TIA!

Just make sure you have two big monitors to connect your laptop to. That, along with your cheap printer, should be fine.

I don't think I've ever needed to print anything for work, whenever I print something it's just for personal preference. If you do, can't imagine it'll be an urgent thing that can't wait a couple of days. And your home printer is probably fine.

I've never needed my printer for work, at all, much less a "high quality" printer. The only context in which you could need it would be if you like hard copies of things (in which case you know if low-quality bothers you).

I guess it's also possible that might be required to sign something and scan it, but that is incredibly rare and nobody cares if the print quality is low.

If you are doing any litigation, it can be nice to have a basic print and scan, so you can apply a wet signature while working from home for the rare occasions where local rules require that.

Otherwise, only necessary if you are one of those people who have to review on paper.

Your firm will probably offer you a printer, and potentially you may only be able to use the firm-supplied printer with your firm laptop. If you need something substantial printed, you can probably also ask the printroom to print it and send it to you on a bike courier (assuming you are reasonably close to the office).
