Hey everyone - I'm a senior associate in a big law corporate speciality practice, and exploring what it'd be like to start my own solo shop. Basically, I'm looking for more flexibility in terms of my schedule and the type of work I take on.
I don't have a great sense of where to start, but was curious if anyone had any resources or recommendations on how to get this off the ground. For example, would love to hear about billing software you'd recommend, how much you spend on resources (e.g., Bloomberg), setting up an LLC, how you manage conflicts, setting your billable rate, what you typically see in terms of realization, etc. from a corporate perspective.
The plan is to market myself to both individuals and small corporate shops that don't offer my specialty.
Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing as you. How are you planning on getting clients?

This is the OP - Plan is to leverage some friends who have opened small shops and some various other professional connections. Would love to hear from others who have taken a similar path.

Forgot her name, but I remember there was a UChicago / K&E alumna who has her own shop now. FWIW she's active on social media and actually passes on as cringy af, but that makes it easy to find her info and reach out I guess.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Sep 06, 2022 1:08 pmThis is the OP - Plan is to leverage some friends who have opened small shops and some various other professional connections. I'm pretty active on here and you can take a look at my AMA thread. I also have three friends that have done this. two are wife and husband and make a killing. I won't say how much but its likely I'll never clear what they do. My other friend does the same but he pitches himself as outside GC on a flat fee. Seems to work very well for him too.
