Lateral exit from DOJ/FTC (antitrust)

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Aug 28, 2022 12:09 am

Looking for advice on potential move from government enforcement agency to big law firm. 5-7 years’ experience at the agency, plus clerkships.

Interested in prospects of being hired and at what level of seniority, billing hours, quality of life, salary/bonus, and which private antitrust practices in DC have best people/environment.

You should work with a recruiter. At your level of seniority (senior associate/counsel), you're probably not going to find a ton of public postings, but there may firms who want someone with your experience. Last year antitrust hiring was booming, but things may have slowed down recently.

Assuming you end up in the V100, you'll probably earn around $400k plus a bonus of around $100k if you meet your hours (typically 1900-2000, including maybe 100-200 pro bono).

Your colleagues who have come from private practice, and former colleagues who have left for private practice, can tell you more about quality of life, good and bad practices, etc.

The market is still hot right now in terms of hiring and for your level of experience. Definitely co-sign the above comment recommending a recruiter who can get ahead on certain firm/job postings.

That being said, definitely ask around in terms of work-life balance and work culture of the firm before committing, dealing with draining billables on top of fielding toxic partners is not fun.
