(SA) Asking a firm to split offices for no really good reason? Forum

How open are firms to splitting offices, say eight weeks in one place (big market) and two weeks in another (small market)? My reason would be simply wanting to try living in x city because of family there, and I would seriously consider moving there should I enjoy it.
Does this depend on how much the firm wants you? How would I find this out?

There's no harm in asking.

2 weeks isn't really splitting, maybe frame it as visiting? If you really want to have the other location as an option you would probably need to be there at least 4 weeks (and they would have to have hiring needs....)

The fact that you would seriously consider moving there should you enjoy it is good enough of a reason IMO. Also agree with the two posts above: no harm asking, and you might want to ask for more than two weeks to actually experience the city/office.

Curious if this would apply to asking to split with another big office that may be ranked higher. Say I have a NY offer and asking to split with DC (ranked a bit higher)? would this be looked at as an unreasonable request?

These types of requests typically get rejected. For example, I know someone who was accepted at Covington NY and rejected at Covington DC who tried weasel around it by unsuccessfully attempting to split after the accepting the NY offer. But no harm in asking I suppose.

I wonder if it would be different if I never applied to the DC office and "have the grades" for it. also who is the best person to ask this to? recruiter? partner I got along with? hiring partner? thanks!

No firm is going to accept a 2-week split. 4 weeks is probably the minimum. And having done a similar split between NY and DC offices of the same firm, you usually have to interview for the more "prestigious" office, and doing it before they have set their summer program is advisable.
