3rd year looking to change groups ( re: exits)

TLS, thank you in advance.

I'm a 3rd year LevFi associate in Boston who has tried in vain this summer to obtain an in-house exit. Turns out, most companies don't really need a full-time finance associate and most of the asset managers are located in NYC.

So now I'm thinking that maybe I'll lateral to a new firm in a different practice group to give myself a better shot of lateraling thereafter. I'm at my original summer firm now so suspect that one year at my new firm would not be too soon to leave or make me appear to be a habitual job-hopper.

It's probably too much of a stretch to switch into privacy, which is too bad because there appear to be a fuckton of jobs. I expect to take a class year hit (or even two) but don't want to pivot quite that hard. My question is more whether a move to funds (which I know nothing about) would be helpful or perhaps general corporate.

Curious if others have experienced anything similar and how you navigated the process.

My hunch is that moving to general corporate will be an easier transition from a skill set perspective and it’s definitely a background that a broader array of house roles look for as opposed to funds.

I don’t want to dissuade you from switching groups because I agree that finance is definitely not the best background for in house, but also I think part of it is your level of seniority. I think switching groups will help make you more marketable, especially combined with another year or two of experience.
