anyone at a firm that uses this want to speak to whether it's really optional and, if not, how it impacts a candidates application? can not taking it or underperforming "break" an otherwise strong candidate? or is it more symbolic just to dehumanize candidates before they apply so they know what they r getting into?

I didn't complete it and got an offer from a firm that asked me to do it, so for at least some firms it isn't required.
