Notoriously toxic culture especially in the M&A group.

So I've heard, but a) my current summer firm is a bit toxic in the first place and b) m&a ain't my top choice of practice group.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 1:52 pmNotoriously toxic culture especially in the M&A group.

Anon bc just finished summering at STB. Honestly, I feel like it's the same person rehashing his/her dislike of STB M&A in every thread. From what I've heard, there are a few bad apples (i.e., very inconsiderate of associates' schedules during fire drills/super demanding/etc.), but that's to be expected at every V10. Everyone I've worked with in M&A was very chill and pleasant to be around. And Funds/Cap Markets partners are even more laid back, if that's what OP is aiming for. Again, I'm not saying the toxic M&A people don't exist. They do - but to say the culture is "notoriously toxic" is just dramatic. You might not even ever work with those 2-3 partners during your associate years.
Good luck with the process OP, and maybe see you next fall!

Idk man. You're a summer who likely spent less than 4 hours a week doing substantive work. The idea that you have a pulse on the culture at STB isn't exactly indicative of anything. Obviously recruiting will trot out the nicest. But wait till you have Marni blowing up your inbox on a Sunday morning screaming at you for not responding within 30 minutes despite no prior warning and no impending deadlines.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 6:43 pmAnonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 1:52 pmNotoriously toxic culture especially in the M&A group.

I'm a big fan of anon abuse but I do wish you could see at least within a thread which anon is which. There's no real reason to think STB is materially worse than peer firms.

Another STB summer here. I was staffed on a couple of M&A assignments and while I didn't have any bad experiences, I have heard through some of the associates (informally) that there are difficult partners to work with and that it sort of pervades through the group.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 6:43 pmAnonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 1:52 pmNotoriously toxic culture especially in the M&A group.

Question about the process. @ OP or anyone else going through 3L applications: Did you apply through your school or cold email recruiting? Is it like 2L OCI where there's a screener and then you get invited to a callback? Is everything remote, hybrid, in-person? Thanks in advance!

Got it. Is there no screener? Also, if you don't mind sharing, how different was the callback compared to 2L callbacks?

Do you know other people who also got the email? Based on the two threads, might be just us two who got waitlisted. Those who got the offer might not be on TLS.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 8:12 pmYes. Re: STB 3L Hiring Callback to Offer Timeline
Did anyone else have to sign up for a "virtual preliminary interview" as part of the process?
3L direct apply who went straight to callback last year pre-OCI. Was kind of surprised they seem to be doing screeners before callbacks as part of this.

I can confirm this. Anyone who just summered there, you don't know anything about what it's like to actually work there.

I mean, in some sense of course summer associates don't know anything about what it's like to work at any law firm.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Aug 20, 2022 12:44 amElaborate.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:24 pmI can confirm this. On the other hand, this is almost certainly the same anon poster who appears on every thread about STB and posts the same generic negative comments, often word-for-word.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
