Is there any specific reason they do this?

Paul Hastings did this, at least when I was a summer which was a while ago now (c/o 2015), so it may have changed. The rationale was that they wanted to make offers to everyone in the summer class (at least within the same office) at the same time and since we had people starting early/ending late due to law school schedules some people ended up having to wait a week or two whereas others got offers their last day.

Interesting that GDC and Paul Hastings were mentioned. I was at one of the notable SV firms this summer and we received offers in the week following the summer program. Explanation given to me was that it was the more California-style way of doing things.

So maybe it's mostly on a coastal divide.

Gibson does not necessarily do this--they say they will not tell summers for weeks, but they definitely tell at least some summers in some offices within a few days of the summer program ending.

And they tell other folks—informally—that they have nothing to worry about, etc. Barring serious performance issues, I don't think most GDC summers are on pines and needles waiting for an offer in the weeks following the program.
