Big law to Hagens Berman LA (or other top plaintiffs’ firm)?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:42 am

Hi all. Does anyone have any insight on Hagens Berman, specifically if they have any quirks for hiring and especially what the comp is for a mid-level? I know P-side places have comp all over the map.

And any thoughts or advice about lateraling from big law to a top plaintiffs’ firm? Like Hagens, Hausfeld, Lieff Cabraser, etc. Somewhere with a good bit of antitrust (i.e., not primarily a securities fraud firm). What do these kinds of places want in a lateral? Trial experience, class action work, other p-side work, clerkships . . . . ? And are they less prone to hire more senior associates (like year 6 and up) from big law?

Currently a junior litigation associate at a big firm in LA, with commercial and antitrust work, and did a district court clerkship.

Thanks!

There’s also a hagens office in my market that posts openings once every couple years. I have no idea what the answers to any of your questions are, but I’m also interested.

I did the opposite jump (good plaintiff’s firm to big law), but was involved in interviews and hiring discussions at my former firm. Like anywhere, they’re looking for a good story for why you want to make the change, so they believe their investment in you will be rewarded.

Look through your contacts and see if you know anyone with ties of these firms that could help your resume stand out from the pack, as the biggest battle is often just getting noticed from a stack of resumes. From there, it’s a numbers game. Keep applying, talking with people and expressing your interest, and trying to make it happen until it does. I did the same thing for my move. It took about eight months, but I landed where I wanted to be.
