Failed Bar Exam - V10 Offer

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jul 26, 2022 6:50 pm

Yeah, I realize I might be freaking out, but holy sh*t that was rough. So, if I fail the bar, do I automatically get another chance? Are there firms that don't give you a second shot? V10 offer in primary market that is not NYC.

First you probably are gonna pass. Relax.

Second, rule of thumb at every top firm I’m aware of is that you get two shots at it.

If you’re a good enough student to get an offer at a V10, you aren’t going to fail. Just chill.

If you studied and thought it was rough, you likely passed. It's usually folks that didn't study enough and can't spot the issues (e.g., thinking they hit all the issues) that have trouble passing.

Nevertheless, there's literally nothing you can do. Relax and enjoy this time! It's so special. Enjoy every single minute of it.

Are you ESL? Did you get your offer only because your father is Xi Jinping?

Less than 20 percent of takers fail, and you're not going to be one of them.

I literally did not study for the written portion, got one hour of sleep, wrote gibberish, and scored median on that section. And then I scored 99th percentile on multiple choice. You'll be OK.

sometimes people just don't answer 1-2 questions though, and then don't get 99% MBE. Not saying that's OP

I also just took the test. It was hard, it was not expected, but everybody had the exact same experience. We all felt universally f***ed.

If you are working at a V10, you are likely smart and you are likely a hard worker. If you're posting this anxiously, you also likely worked hard for the bar. Based on these assumptions, you are smarter, more hard working, and studied harder than a lot of people taking the bar today. You will pass. You will be fine.

Let's get this multiple choice tomorrow!

About what percentage correct on the MBE is 50th percentile?

Secondary market v30. I was supposed to start in September. I said the statute of repose for legal malpractice was 5 years when really it’s only 4. Should I start applying for paralegal positions? Would anyone even want a paralegal who failed the bar?

I’ve read 60%. So if you actually know 20% and can reduce the rest to a 50/50 guess you should be good

How long did you study for? I don't know anybody who finished 70%-80% of a course who didn't pass. The ones I know who did fail spent the whole summer lolling around, but there were even people who did that and were passed. Short story is there are FAR more people who think they failed than those who actually did. Statistics say you're more likely to be in the first category.

If you fail (unlikely) you will get another shot. Your V10 spent $$$ to get you in the door, and it's easier for them to let you hang around to try again than to start recruiting a replacement. That said, whether or not it's true, I'd treat the job like you are on thin ice and try your ass off between now and the next bar so they don't find another reason to axe you.

I assume you're not in CA, but if you were, this is much more common there and you'd have even less to worry about.

Every year, everyone walks out of the bar convinced they’ve failed; they’re always wrong. Don’t worry about this yet.

I had to talk my spouse into going back for the second day because they were convinced they had already failed after the first and there was no point in going back. Guess what? They passed.

OP didn’t fail. But I knew I’d passed as soon as the MBE was over.

What year? In recent years they've been mixing it up in the MBE too. July '21 was particularly brutal. I was getting 80% right in practice sets and felt good before the exam. But the actual exam felt like it was a completely different test from what I'd prepared for. Had no idea how I'd done. Got 160+.

Something pretty messed up about an exam that makes you think like you failed when you did well.

I won’t give class year but in past 5 years. The whole thing is just pointless hazing by “bar examiners” aka old unimpressive gatekeepers

Okay, let me revise my off the cuff remark to be more precise: every year, tons of people come online to lament how terrible the exam was, how hard it was, how unexpected it was, and to insist that they know they failed, only to come back with passing results a few months later. The OP is way more typical than you are.

If anything, the v10 OP freaking out means he noticed a lot more issues than your average Pace or Touro grad would have

I knew I didn’t fail because I knew that seeing a bunch of hard issues = understanding the gist of the questions = passing by a wide margin.
