If only Ken never sold... I'm going to be a 1L this Fall and the old threads/posts here are way, way better than any info I've found on Reddit. But it's left me wondering how applicable they are today... (especially the legendary 'How to Do Well' guides from Xeoh/Arrow/Scribe back in 09/10)

You had a lot of accomplished people back then who gave great advice and weren’t arrogant unless it was to be funny. Now you have first year associates acting like they’ve made a fortune at the end of a successful career. Plus the half dozen mods who shrilly warn and ban this forum dry.

Absolutely. Some heavy posters here created their own site to try to recreate TLs but it never took off. Reddit is the best bet. Some joker necro’d ole miss v Memphis law and I made a short “SEC girls must’ve been” post and got my second warning. Reddit now provides better info overall and is more entertaining. TLS regulars have the personalities of rodents.

Yes he does own it. It’s really hard to believe what this site has become after several years away from it (last had an account in 2016). Without JDUnderground, Nando’s website, I guess they all have gone to Reddit. Everyone here gets warnings and banned and there’s little materials that is either useful or entertaining.

I've been wondering what has happened to the usership on TLS. I was a frequent visitor when I was applying to law school in 2016/2017, stopped visiting completely while in law school, and then have come back post-law-school to find that it is almost a ghost town relative to what it was 5 years ago. In particular, the Lounge is completely dead. Did something in particular happen while I was gone that drove so many people away? I feel like there was a user with Brad Pitt as his avatar that was hilarious and posted all the time? And some guy named Kelly with a like a second grader's sketch as his avatar?

I actually find the Harrison Barnes website and past blog posts very helpful and interesting. Yes, he tends to overstate or exaggerate certain points, but he’s a valuable voice in this industry IMO.

The poster in question started multiple flame wars, then sent me numerous PMs complaining and trashing the forum when I told him to tone it down. After that back and forth (which happed after two warnings to keep things civil and respectful), he then took to this forum to complain again about the moderation. Let's just say that attacking the moderator is a great way to get banned on any forum.

It was the viral Youtube video of Prof Bridges of Berkeley Law, at the hearing with Senator Hawley. The link was included in the post on TLS. It bugged one of the Mods. Apparently.

As mentioned in that sub-thread, the poster in question was banned because he was repeatedly evading a forum ban so that he could pursue a personal vendetta against a random admissions consultant. The initial ban (and the subsequent multiple bans of his sockpuppet accounts) had nothing to do with the content of the hearing video.

I can't complain, I don't want to get banned although there is always Reddit, another forum that shall not be named that most of the veteran posters here went to when TLS was bought, and xoxohth.com (autoadmit, this is the fun one). JDUnderground was more my scene when I wanted to chat with lawyers who knew what they were doing, but hey what can you do?

My three warnings were for:
1.Criticizing NYC's smells
2. Mentioning the quality of "Southern gals" in the context of OP deciding between Memphis Law and Ole Miss
3. Criticizing the moderators

To be even-handed, Nealric, I did not intentionally start any flame wars. I posted what were pretty candid and earnest accounts of my legal career and people thought they were way more amusing than I could have guessed. Yes, I understand saying medmal gets a chuckle on a big law/public interest dominated forum but it really is not that funny. Regarding the PMs, I try to keep those views private, to avoid said flame wars.

You should not post anonymously unless you are revealing information about your employment or other identifying markers.

The thread's title was "Biglaw associates: What class year were you when you bought a house? How expensive of a house did you get?" I see no reference to NYC there. It is as "off-topic" as a thread on which tech stocks to buy and someone says "tech is overheated, I think industrials are undervalued relative to tech for xyz reasons." It was other posters' decision to overreact. I answered what year I was when I purchased my house and its price. Next time feel free to PM me instead of going off topic here.
