DPW v. STB v. PW v. S&C for White Collar Lit
Crowdsourcing for some help! I'm deciding between Davis Polk, Simpson Thacher, Paul Weiss, and SullCrom for NYC. I'm very thankful for the offers and would like to do White Collar work (secondarily, general Civil Commercial Litigation) and become an AUSA in EDNY/SDNY. I'm looking for a place with great USAO connections, strong white collar practice that gives substantive work to associates (i.e. research and drafting as opposed to doc review), nice people, and where I will certainly get White Collar/Lit work and not be placed in corporate (Top 5-10% at a T6 if that matters in terms of practice placement security). What's my best bet?
Thanks in advance!

On the metrics you identified, all those places are the same so just go where you feel like the vibe suits you best. At all of those firms, you won't really have control over whether you get "substantive work." Some litigation associates at those places do lots of research and drafting and even speak in court; others spend hours upon hours doing doc review without really developing any other meaningful litigation skills. It's almost entirely a matter of luck. If you're serious about getting meaningful litigation experience, then go to a boutique.

Generally, STB is a weaker firm for white collar and AUSA connects than the other three here. They also have a smaller group and I think would be more likely to not give you the placement you’re looking for. The other three are all fantastic for white collar, and all of them have a lot of connected former prosecutors and reliably send folks to the NY area USAO. Just on practice group strength from the vantage group of a guy in one of the blue blood DC white collar practices, I’d tentatively say that S&C and PW are marginally the better respected two firms. They are pretty different places though, so I’d make the decision based more on cultural fit, vibe with partners, office location etc. Fwiw I love the white collar guys at S&C and think they have a fantastic practice, but don’t love the firm culture as a whole. Can’t go wrong though — congrats!Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 9:56 amCrowdsourcing for some help! I'm deciding between Davis Polk, Simpson Thacher, Paul Weiss, and SullCrom for NYC. Thanks! What lit boutiques hire summer associates in NY? I know Morvillo doesn’t.

I think for your goals, each of these firms are good picks. With that being said, you need a clerkship, so if you’re a rising 2L I’d really focus on that over the upcoming year!Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 9:56 amCrowdsourcing for some help! What’s the culture difference between these four firms?

They are 4 groups of 700 people, none of them have particularly unifying cultures outside of "these people all did really well in law school"Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 5:45 pmWhat’s the culture difference between these four firms?
