In-house opp comp assessment (TX)

Post by Anonymous User » Sat May 14, 2022 2:27 pm

Please let me know your thoughts on this comp package for an in-house role in Texas. Currently Biglaw 3rd/4th yr general corporate. I paid off my student loans recently.

$175k base
20% target bonus - ~$35k
6% 401k match - $10k
No stock at my level (available after promotion in a few years)
All in around ~$210k excluding the $10k 401k contribution
Between 40-50 hours week, no work on weekends
3 weeks vacation to start and all public holidays
Lifestyle type job but with growth potential (company with a known well balanced culture)

I voted need more info.

I don't think this is a great deal -- at least on comp. Depending on whether you're a 3rd or 4th year, you're taking something like a ~175k comp. hit. Maybe that's cool if it is truly a lifestyle type job, do you really think it will be (that's not rhetorical, I am wondering if you have very solid intel that it will be, otherwise I'm skeptical as a general matter).

What kind of debt are you servicing? Also, how big is this company and what is the actual role?

Thanks for responding. Lifestyle confirmed through 2 friends who have no reason to lie or inflate. Servicing a very manageable amount of house debt (couple hundred thousand) and that’s it. No car debt. Good cash cushion (100).

Legal counsel role at large company. Absolute to work for the various legal divisions, you move groups every 5 years. Next job would be like 225 base.

Biglaw pays a lot because it controls your life. I’ve done the diligence to ensure this would be a material change from that.

That's definitely at the higher end for 3/4 YOE for Texas.
