1 year of Biglaw after 7 years of government experience
Hi all.
I've got around 7 years of local and fed government experience and now 1 year of big law. All L&E related. Is that enough for non profit type in house L&E and some of the more selective government employment work? Will only doing 1 year of big law hurt me? Thanks.

Only doing 1 year of biglaw will hurt you because it looks weird to only be in a job for one year. Otherwise, I see no issue.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 10:42 amHi all.

Re: 1 year of Biglaw after 7 years of government experience
These days it's super common to move around, and if you lasted at previous job 5+ years I can't imagine you'd look flighty. Plus it's a reasonable narrative that you tried biglaw and the schedule didn't work. Don't say that exactly but people get it. That's why people go in house.
I think it really depends on what your actual biglaw experience consisted of. In house would be hiring you based on your biglaw background, not government. If you didn't have real responsibilities that's a tough sell. But if you can plausibly sell yourself as a senior associate with a experience including biglaw, that could work.

I also think that depending on the industry and the nature of the government work, some in-house positions might value the government work as well. Certainly not guaranteed, but not impossible.

Thanks for the responses. I don't see myself doing firm or private sector work again. So I'm hoping the comments about people understanding the lifestyle of biglaw not working out with them not being corporate employers hold true.

I don't think people will care that much to be honest. People move around and it's no secret that biglaw sucks.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 10:42 amHi all.

No one will care and the people clowning your government experience, never worked in government. Whether you get a job in-house will depend on your overall experience. People can easily get in-house jobs after working for the government. You have 7 years of l and e experience. You should be competitive for l and e positions. Have you done counseling, depositions, trials, discovery? Then you qualified.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 10:42 amHi all.
