Re: Morgan Lewis Chicago (Transactional)
MLB's Chicago office is 100 attorneys, so it's not that small. New office is very nice. Culture is OK for biglaw. Mayer Brown is going to be better known in the city. Don't think either is going to be more humane than the other. Can't speak the specific practice.

Obviously a little far down the road for me, but would either have a distinct advantage for lateral options assuming I want to stay in Chicago area?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 1:30 pmMLB's Chicago office is 100 attorneys, so it's not that small. Re: Morgan Lewis Chicago (Transactional)
Mayer Brown is going to have a higher volume of laterals both in and out given its relative size in the city, so you will probably have a better lateral network. Otherwise, while Mayer is a Chicago HQ firm and likely considered a better firm in certain practices, nobody is going to substantially differentiate a Mayer lateral and MLB lateral. The same applies to Katten, Jenner, McDermott, and Winston. KE/Sidley/Latham/Skadden kind of exist at the top and then everyone else is in the mushy middle with the third tier being the Vedder Prices and Seyfarth Shaws of the world.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 1:33 pmObviously a little far down the road for me, but would either have a distinct advantage for lateral options assuming I want to stay in Chicago area?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 1:30 pmMLB's Chicago office is 100 attorneys, so it's not that small. If you want to do finance in Chicago, it’s a no brainer to take MB over ML. Not really a close call.

Knowing what I do about how these practices stand up in Chicago, I can see how this is a reasonable take on its face, but would you mind expanding?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 3:33 pmIf you want to do finance in Chicago, it’s a no brainer to take MB over ML. Not really a close call.

I think so, but probably more middle market than a KE/Sidley. They just poached one of Sidley's top LevFin guy* this week.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 7:26 pmDoes MB even do levfin?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 3:33 pmIf you want to do finance in Chicago, it’s a no brainer to take MB over ML. Is MB really that prestigious here? I never hear them in the conversation with like KE, Sidley, etc.

Preffffffftige so important. If you hadn't noticed, OP isn't choosing between Morgan Lewis and KE/Sidley/etc.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 2:40 pmIs MB really that prestigious here? I never hear them in the conversation with like KE, Sidley, etc.

Yeah I mean, as far as I know there's really not much difference between the various V30-60ish firms.Sackboy wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 3:26 pmPreffffffftige so important. It's not so much that there's a qualitative difference between Morgan Lewis and Mayer Brown, it's just that MB is a Chicago firm with deep roots to the city.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 3:50 pmYeah I mean, as far as I know there's really not much difference between the various V30-60ish firms.Sackboy wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 3:26 pmPreffffffftige so important. But that's just personal preference, if you want to be in a Chicago firm or a satellite. At that point it's more about the specific group, who you're working with, etc.Moneytrees wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 5:05 pmIt's not so much that there's a qualitative difference between Morgan Lewis and Mayer Brown, it's just that MB is a Chicago firm with deep roots to the city.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 3:50 pmYeah I mean, as far as I know there's really not much difference between the various V30-60ish firms.Sackboy wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 3:26 pmPreffffffftige so important.
