Summer Associate Brushing Teeth
I used to work as a paralegal, and I'd like to brush my teeth after lunch, dinner, etc. I worked at a boutique firm with two private bathrooms, where all of the attorneys would do the same thing. Now, I'll be summering as an associate at a large New York law firm. Will I be a weirdo if I bring a toothbrush/toothpaste to freshen my breath after lunch? Is is standard practice among attorneys? Any advice welcome...

It’s not standard practice and some people will probably think you’re weird if they see you doing it. But you can do it if you want. There won’t be any serious consequences.

I do this at my V10 and have never felt weird at all. Also, the two other people I have seen doing this on my floor are senior partners.

They won't think you're weird. Salespeople I've worked with often brush their teeth after meals. Got to keep those pearly whites glistening and that breath minty fresh if you want to get clients!Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 1:31 pmIt’s not standard practice and some people will probably think you’re weird if they see you doing it. If anything, more people should be brushing their teeth at the office (and in general).

Some firms have gender neutral private bathrooms. May want to use that one if available. Just an idea.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 1:23 pmI used to work as a paralegal, and I'd like to brush my teeth after lunch, dinner, etc. I worked at a boutique firm with two private bathrooms, where all of the attorneys would do the same thing. Back when I was in NY V20 biglaw some years ago, I always saw a few associates and partners brushing their teeth just like I did. I had to brush my teeth right after any meal as I was wearing invisalign.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 1:31 pmIt’s not standard practice and some people will probably think you’re weird if they see you doing it. Nobody will think you are weird. The ones that don't do it are lazy tbh. I don't do it that often anymore, but I know this is not the right away to take care of my teeth.

Dental associations recommend twice a day, so while there’s nothing wrong with brushing after lunch it doesn’t make you lazy not to do it.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 1:20 amBack when I was in NY V20 biglaw some years ago, I always saw a few associates and partners brushing their teeth just like I did. Not sure which dental association you are referring to. Most dentists recommend brushing teeth after meals. Dentists themselves brush their teeth after meals. I brush my teeth after waking up in the morning, before having sex, and before going to bed. There is no reason to stick to twice a day.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 7:17 amDental associations recommend twice a day, so while there’s nothing wrong with brushing after lunch it doesn’t make you lazy not to do it.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 1:20 amBack when I was in NY V20 biglaw some years ago, I always saw a few associates and partners brushing their teeth just like I did. again, nothing wrong with brushing 3x a day, it just doesn't make those of us who don't lazy or taking bad care of their teeth.
but thanks for letting us know you have sex.

Personally I don’t brush or even shower before sex. First, because smelling me is a privilege. Second, because it saves me time and effort. Third, because it filters out those who don’t truly love me.

Nothing says spontaneous passion like running out to brush your teeth!Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 7:48 amNot sure which dental association you are referring to. It's weird but not out of this world weird.
An example of the latter is if you were washing your feet in the sink ....

I'm in-house counsel and if I ever heard of an associate doing this, I would call up the relationship partner and demand you be removed from any of our matters. Even with all that, there is a good chance I still fire your firm.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 2:36 pmMy firm would prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law for doing this. I think brushing your teeth, even in the privacy of a unisex bathroom, could have deleterious and unknowable effects as to future character and fitness investigations. Be extremely careful. Trust no one.Joachim2017 wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 2:44 pmI'm in-house counsel and if I ever heard of an associate doing this, I would call up the relationship partner and demand you be removed from any of our matters. Look mouthwash is basically just alcohol anyway so what you really wanna do is take a big ole two shots of vodka after lunch. And you want people to know how sanitary you are so make sure to splash it around a bits o people can smell the cleanliness.

This is only acceptable if you leave your toothbrush and toothpaste by the bathroom sink.
