Does an RC/LP at SLS/HLS during 2L put a 2L SA position in jeopardy?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Apr 27, 2022 1:31 pm

I've been struggling with mental health and might get one of the above grades in a class. Do firms closely look at 2L grades before officially giving return offers? Has anyone heard of a firm no-offering someone because of their 2L grades? I've always gotten a P or higher, and the firm is competitive + small class size, which is why I'm worried.

Is there anything I can do to make up for it at this point to keep my return offer safe, given that I start the internship in a month or so?

It's really unlikely that low 2L grades would impact your chances of getting an offer of full-time post-graduate employment at a biglaw firm after your SA summer, even if the firm is competitive and very grades-reliant in its summer associate hiring. The only issue would be if you didn't finish your 2L year, dropped so many courses that you were no longer a full time student, did so poorly you were placed on academic probation, or took a formal leave of absence that delayed your anticipated graduation date. If you do a good job as a summer and get good reviews, you should get an offer. If you don't get an offer, it's unlikely that low 2L grades are the reason you didn't.

If you're at SLS, you should consider talking to the Prof or one of the assistant Deans and let them know you've been struggling. My impression is that the school will do a whole lot to avoid giving a student an RC, especially in a difficult time like this.
