Paternity leave timing Forum

Just curious about how I should time noticing my paternity leave. My wife has a lousy maternity leave policy at her work, so I’m going to need to be the primary and take something like the full leave. My group knows we’re expecting (due in August), but I’m somewhat dreading letting them know that I’ll need to take the full leave, particularly as I didn’t have a great year billable wise.

Would it be inappropriate to send in the leave dates to HR first, and then talk with partners in the group after our reviews our over in May?

Thanks. I should clarify, HR already knows we’re expecting and is just waiting on paperwork. I originally thought I should talk to the partners before sending in a request, but not even every partner knows we’re pregnant yet because some come into the office so rarely.

I'd just fill out the forms with HR, then FYI the partners.

Paternity leave is when it works for your family. No one expects you to schedule time with a newborn based on workflow at the firm.

Did you tell the partners you weren't going to take the full leave? If so, then it may be worth correcting yourself now that you've changed your mind. If not, then they should assume you'll take the full term as you're entitled to.
