3L Law Clerk

Post by kingofkingz » Sat Apr 09, 2022 10:22 pm

What's the deal with corporate law clerk positions within Biglaw for 3L's while still in law school? How exactly do these kids convince the employer to keep paying past the 2L SA while still in school? It seems like it wouldn't be very useful for part-time work given that 3L's don't really know much until they start working full-time, and given the need to be "on call" for live deals. Overall interested but don't know how to ask a firm for this without being too forward / aggressive.

Also interested. Am also curious if people have been able to convince their firm to take them on as an intern/extern/clerk at another office during the school year, particularly if studying abroad or doing a semester in another city domestically.

I would ask your recruiter or maybe your mentor if its possible. A lot, but not all, offices will do this - don't think inquiring about wanting to work is being too forward or aggressive.

From my understanding most 3L clerks have a relatively set schedule and aren't really on call. Not sure what that looks like in terms of the workstream but I would imagine its mostly ancillary docs that aren't urgent

I think it depends on the firm and is something offered not requested. I (1Y ass fwiw) can see it useful for the mega firms, have a pools of semi useless interns available to run redlines, pull together sig pages, whatever else summers are usually trusted with. Can see the concern of not being on call which is why I think it makes sense for the huge firms more.

Personally I'm on a deal where one of the ppl ccd on opposite side is a 3L. He's never emailed us anything but I assume he's participating somehow?

Also interested in whether big law firms hire clerks if you are studying abroad, since I will be doing that in the fall
