How long have you been at the boutique now?

I lateraled twice in 2021. Got full bonus, worked only like 1000 hours.

To the lateralati, do you have concerns about being seen as a job hopper if you ever decide to go in-house and employers see a ton of firms over several years?

I’m only interested in start ups, which means I’ll be job hopping every few years anyway.

Nope, given that I am very happy at my boutique and intend to make it my last firm (i.e. if I do leave, it won't be for another firm). Three doesn't seem too bad. That being said, I'll just leave the V50 off my resume, which I was only at for a little over 2 months. You don't need to put everything on your resume. To cover it up, I'll just put 2018-2019 V10 and 2019-Present boutique. It's a much easier discussion to have post-offer when running conflicts than pre-offer. Post-offer, I know that they want me after several rounds of interviews, and I can just shrug and go "bad fit". Pre-offer, it might be the thing that stops me from getting to go through the comprehensive interview process.

I would...not leave one of my three full-time legal jobs off my resume and then attempt to cover it up by playing with the dates

A resume doesn’t need to list every job you ever had.

I didn't say it did. I said I would not leave one of my three full-time legal jobs off my resume and then attempt to cover it up by playing with the dates lol

That's not what they said? They said they would be vague and remove months. Nothing wrong with that (tho it may raise questions). That's not playing with dates. Might even make sense to just do non chronological resume.

Somewhat disagree — using discretion on your resume is fair game (absent actual lying/fraud), as the point of that document is to *market yourself* to potential employers

Although I agree I would not do this on, say, a corresponding application form should it asks to list all employers in past ten years or something.

I’m only interested in start ups, which means I’ll be job hopping every few years anyway.
How does one get involved in start ups anyway? Networking or is there some job posting board for these kinds of jobs?

Original OP, and I'm surprised this is even a debate. A resume is what you want to present to a potential employer. There is no reason to include employment that you think could work against you. Also, as someone who frequently reviews lateral resumes, plenty of folks use YYYY to YYYY dates for firms on resumes. The idea that this is some coverup or even remotely a bad idea is silly. The only realistic possibility of this ever biting anyone in the ass is if the leave off an employer that they were fired from for what would amount to "cause". If you were at an employer, didn't like it, and dipped, nobody is going to hold that against you when they find out in the conflicts process. If asked why you didn't put it on your resume, you just go "I wasn't there for long enough to have anything substantive to say about it and wanted to highlight my much longer experiences at X and Y."
