Is there value in going to a 1L Diversity conference?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Feb 21, 2022 11:29 pm

I applied to a few 1L biglaw diversity conferences and have been accepted to a few (I'm not an URM). Should I take out 2-3 days out of my 1L spring to go to a 1L conference with a firm I'm interested in? Or are these just fluff events?

One of my top choice firms is hosting a 1L diversity conference, and I'd definitely go to the conference if it would give me a boost during 2L OCI.

Yes, go.

People you meet at these conferences will likely be interviewers during OCI, and it'll be helpful if you've already met them in a non-interview setting.

Why are you going if you're not an URM?

Because they were accepted? And yes go, it’s nice to meet people outside an interview setting.

I feel like a lot of people could not be URM and still accepted to these things. For example, people who are Asian, gay, etc.

Yeah, go, if you're alright with networking. I've been to a few and even got an extra interview out of it here and there as well as contacts I could reach out to later which helped me get further in interview processes than others. It always helps that you're able to say "I spoke to Mr. X and we...." to indicate you have an actual longer-standing interest in the firm aside from how good their name looked when you applied.
