NYLE notice of charges

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Feb 19, 2022 5:15 pm

Hey all, yesterday i received a notice of charges from the NYLE accusing me of speeding up two out of the 18 videos. I didnt read the terms and didnt realize we couldnt do it on our phone. But i did watch the other 16 in real time on a laptop. I am very scared, has anyone gone through this or know anyone who has and what the consequences were? Will this keep me from getting admitted to the bar (no other blemishes or records for anythinf) and more importantly can anyone give any advice on how to write the response that would elicit the least punishment? I genuinely did not know, and my phone was super glitchy for those 2 videos. Thank you in advance!

do you mean you watched part of the NYLC on your phone and sped up?
if so, i think if you just explain what you said here you'll be completely fine, this is going to do nothing regarding your admission.

OP here. Yes exactly, i just got really scared bc they sent an official letter making it seem like i was a federal criminal and one of the potential penalties they listed was reporting this to the bar later on which freaked me out

Out of curiosity, did they mail you the letter or send you an email?

This happened to me, except I did not even speed up the videos. All I can think is that at the time I was having some wifi issues and that must have registered as speeding it up? Anyways, it was super annoying but I had to watch them all over again. I was especially annoyed since I didn't do anything wrong but wasn't going to risk it by challenging them. I don't recall that I had to officially respond -- I think they just told me I could either rewatch the videos or challenge them and I just opted to rewatch. It caused no problems other than me having to watch the videos again Thanksgiving morning....

It happened to me as well. It actually was considered relatively serious, I had to draft an explanation statement, in which I acknowledged the wrongdoing, said that I was under pressure during exams, and how I appreciated the gravity of the wrongdoing—and then spin it so that it made me realize how one cannot cut corners, especially lawyers in an environment with deadlines, stress, etc.

I also gave a heads up to a partner I felt comfortable with, who advised me to explain the whole thing to the firm GC (because they can find out—e.g., the committee can reach out re: your character, etc.). I also obtained an additional letter supporting my character. To my surprise, the GC took this very seriously and supposedly there was a consideration of employment termination, or maybe they wanted to “punish” me that way, who knows.

In the end, everything was fine, the character interview went well, and the firm was happy I was admitted. At the end of the day, it was a lot of stress about nothing, but it sure is worth being upfront with everyone.

Thank you for sharing - I am in the process of doing the response now. How did the NYLE board punish you? Did they just make you watch everything again or? Thank you

Such a load of nonsense. I’ve heard of people having the videos muted and playing in the background while they did bar prep. You were paying more attention by at least watching them.
