Going back into the office more frequently and getting sick of my backpack. Want something that looks less like I'm an eternal grad student. Anyone have recs on good briefcases/shoulder bags etc.? Willing to spend up to $500 if its really nice

Filson and Fossil are pretty good imo. I liked my Timbuk2, but if you want to spend $500, you are probably looking for classic leather. Linjer is nice for more of the sleek, minimalistic leather look, but a bit pricier.

If you want canvas/nylon, you cant go wrong with a Tumi briefcase, which you can get for $400-500. But I'd probably go with a nice brown leather briefcase, which you can find at a lot of different price points. Coach makes some very understated mens leather brief cases in the $500-600 range, which, iirc, you can find at department stores like Nordstrom and Macy's.

I recommend Briggs and Riley bags. Very high quality bags and lifetime warranties on the bags - tested that one myself. My first bag had a broken zipper about 3-4 years after I bought it. I sent it to Briggs (paid $20 shipping) but it could not be repaired so they gave me the option of taking a credit or accepting a bag that was returned to them. I accepted the bag which came basically brand new. Much nicer than Tumi bags in my opinion and at a better price.

What style are you looking for?

I like saddle bags and I got a Korchmar Garfield. American made, rock solid, but formal enough to take to the client's. It hasn't aged a day aside from a few scuffs. Only complaint is it is a bit heavy. The Saddlebacks seemed to informal to me and the Tustings didn't quite do it for me. Jack George's, Satchel & Page, Frye, and JW Hume looked great, but were less my style as well. I passed over a lot of the more luxury brands like Shinola, Ghurka, Montblanc, etc.

If you want something cheap, my first bag (as a summer associate) was a David King & Co. The leather is far from top quality, but that thing withstood a beating throughout the rest of law school.
