Transferring to another office after 1L SA?
I will be working at a secondary market at a firm (to keep my anonymity, my firm is either Jones Day, Latham, Kirkland, Hogan Lovells, or Quinn Emanuel) for my 1L summer as a summer associate. Although I am excited to work at a firm this summer, I would love to work in the DC office of my firm. I will most likely pursue general commercial litigation.
Does anyone have anecdotal or real experience transferring from a secondary market to the DC office of any of these firms? I'd be stoked if I could work my 2L summer at the DC office. I read through old TLS forums and it seems that Jones Day seems to be relatively ok with transferring, but I haven't seen any posts about 1L SAs attempting to transfer offices.

I know of 2 people personally at Jones Day that were able to go to a different office for 2L. However, they did split their summers between the original and new office location.

Thanks for this! Did they go to JD's DC office by chance? + did they split their summers because they wanted to?kjdsalinger wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 9:36 pmI know of 2 people personally at Jones Day that were able to go to a different office for 2L. I have heard that Latham is super flexible with within-firm relocation

JD might ask you to re-interview for the new office after 1L SA. Pretty standard to switch offices after 2L SA though. Just do a good job and ask to switch after you receive a return offer.

Yes, they split between a CA office and DC, and the other split between a Tx office and DC. As far as wanting to, I cant imagine JD forced them to split.grapes2020 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 9:51 pmThanks for this!
