Feeling Stuck

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Feb 05, 2022 3:19 pm

I’m a junior associate at a V10 restructuring group - feeling very stuck at my job now. The job doesn’t get me excited anymore. The exit market seems pretty dim and there is nothing to look forward to.

I feel you. In almost every way, except I'm a senior. Just make sure you find time for your hobbies and save as much money as you can. You don't need to take every assignment. You can say no. You can protect your time. You don't need to be perfect. And ultimately, "worst" case scenario, you can quit and do something else. I have many peers that have left law entirely to pursue other things so you always have that escape hatch. I actually think that 90% of my friends from law school have quit biglaw and about half of them don't do law at all anymore.

Would it be better if the bankruptcy market were more active? I'm also a junior Rx associate and I've been very slow which makes it hard for me to be excited about the job, even though my hours are amazing by big law standards. My guess is that if there were more defaults going on there'd be more interesting work to do, more lateral opportunities, and more exit ops.

Makes me wonder if it's worth switching practice groups given that I'm still pretty early in my career. I like bankruptcy but not sure I want to be in something so counter-cyclical that I have entire years where my entire department is slow af.
