Firm pays for bar prep, have to pay them back Forum

Has anyone had a firm pay for their bar prep then ended up not working for that firm and had to pay them back? If so, how did that work, and was what you had to pay them much more expensive than if you had self-financed your bar prep?

May be in this situation with my firm soon hence the anon.

what you would pay them would only be more expensive if you used a service that was more expensive that what you would have used instead.

anyways if you're oging to another firm and the first firm demands you pay them back, you likely can get the new firm to make you whole

You would think the new firm would make you whole but some firms won't. I was in this position and the second firm did not make me whole (it was Boies Schiller, so shame on me, lol...)

Lots of firms structure bar expenses as a loan. At such firms, would not expect to be made whole (or for them to forgive the balance for people who renege or leave early).

If they billed their firm directly, those are usually more expensive than if you just paid for whatever program yourself

OP here - In case anyone was curious or future people find this thread: I did some light digging, and it looks like the firm plan is generally 1-1.5k more than the student plan for Barbri. So, pretty bummed about that, but what are you gonna do?

I'm actually pretty surprised by this, because you'd think they would get package deals or something.

This is why many firms (or at least my firm did) get incoming associates to register as a student and pay the cost up front and then reimburse you for it right away.

Right, this is a weird pricing model. Imagine it being cheaper to buy individual plastic cups than a Costco package.

As another data point, I went through this process as well. Just as the second poster described, I had to reimburse the first firm and my second (new) firm made me whole, even though I went with the priciest package which was more than my second firm told summers they could spend.
