Hi TLS, first time poster long time reader here.
I'm looking for some advice on what to emphasize in attempting to switch from litigation to transactional work, either in an interview or application materials.
General background: I'm in a medium market where a couple large firms have offices and there's your typical large one state only firms. I was top 15% at my t40 school and am currently doing a clerkship with the state trial court. My first semester was not great (hence not doing well in OCI), other than that I did very well. My 1L internship was a state government position that was litigation focused, my 2L internship was with a USAO office.
I have a couple of interviews for entry level transactional work at larger firms sometime next year, and I previously interviewed for a couple of v20 positions in a different market my 3L year (which unfortunately did not pan out). I'm just looking for any advice on what to mention about how I'd be a good fit with a transactional practice (probably M&A) despite having a background that screams litigation. I'm planning the usual "I've seen what happens when a deal goes awry/ contract isn't well drafted" and thinking about saying something like "I know it's a different context but I've already started trying to anticipate future issues when writing decisions to ensure my judge isn't appealed and overturned," but if those lines are BS, please let me know. Again, any advice would be helpful.
