Vacation?
Should stubs expect to get any time off for Christmas or the opportunity to take their vacation during the holiday period? Start next year and thinking about planning a trip, but realize it’s a gamble whether I’d be able to go.

If by vacation you mean take off the 24th through 26th and be available for a little remote work, then yeah you can very likely do that.
If it’s like a real, week-plus fully unplugged type of thing, it’s more group dependent. Some corp groups are racing to hit year-end deadlines. Litigation is usually slow on the other hand, but not always (early January reports or deps or filing deadlines can hurt).
Also consider that (if you’re in a slower group) you can probably get away with traveling that week and putting in a very minimal amount of remote work without declaring “vacation.” And then you save some capital to do that at a different time. But this may vary by your firm’s PTO policy; I’m at an unlimited firm and the key consideration is not counting the days with HR but rather announcing the unavailable periods to your partners.
Some people will probably say that stubs shouldn’t take a “real” vacation so early, but I would strongly recommend that you ignore them. Stubs should act like any other employee and use time off as they see fit within the written policies of the firm.
