Goodwin (SF/SV) v. Goodwin (Boston)

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Dec 20, 2021 1:47 am

How do these offices of Goodwin differ from each other when it comes to the type of work being done? I am hoping to be doing emerging companies/venture capital work. Because of this, the Bay has an obvious draw. But with Boston being the HQ, I would assume the same type of opportunities are available for EC/VC work? Would one office be better than the other for setting up a future in-house move to a pre-IPO tech company?

Current Goodwin EC/VC associate in SF/SV here. The work is going to look pretty similar but there's simply a bigger volume of deals in SF/SV notwithstanding the fact that Boston is the mothership just by virtue of how different each market is re: EC/VC work (in 2020, Goodwin did 280 VC deals in the West Coast and 111 in New England and that's only likely gotten more dramatic since). You're also much more likely to get a larger flavor of life science work since it's Boston and roped into cap markets/M&A work in that sector. Ultimately two good choices here but if you're focusing singularly on tech and are indifferent to location (since living in the Bay is worlds different from being in Boston), then SF/SV is likely a better choice for what you want here. Feel free to set up a throwaway account and happy to chat more via DM.

Not that there aren’t people who do all three, but west coast segregates M&A, EC/VC and cap markets more so than east coast. West coast has more dedicated cap markets and M&A teams.

Plus more life sciences on east coast, although there are a few partners on west coast with sizeable LS practice. East coast just has massive LS partners and clients (including Moderna).
