If you want to move back to M&A, why not ask to do so at your new firm? Worst they can say is no, and then you can go back to your old firm with a good excuse and everyone can leave happy (i.e., I wanted to do M&A, thank you so much for the opportunity, and I understand I was hired for Cap Markets here...)
If that group sucks, you can almost certainly still go back to your old gig.
Also, do you know you have a bad rep at the new firm, or just guessing? Can be imposter syndrome, or just focusing on a couple mistakes and taking them out of proportion (I do this, at least I hope I do, lol).
