"Visiting" other offices while traveling?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how plausible it is to be hired at one office and mainly work there, but work at a different office from time to time if I'm traveling to a city where my firm has an office. This is assuming I'm not on any matter that will require me to be available in-person at a moment's notice (wishful thinking, but assuming this is the case).

For example, could my actual office be in LA but work on my California matters in the DC or Shanghai office for a week because I want to visit the city but without taking an actual break? I could see a situation in which I'm visiting a friend in a city but we're both working so we'd just hang out after work hours.

How do firms react to this, and how often could I do this before it's considered unreasonable? Would doing this a couple times (3-4 max) a year be viewed unfavorably?

I think this is largely firm-dependent. There are a few that tout the ability to work seamlessly across offices... Whether or not that's actually the case is another story.

Skadden is pretty good about this but it’s practice group dependent.

It’s group dependent. I know partners who don’t like it when associates “work” from foreign offices since the associate is trying to take a vacation without using vacation days.

My firm would have zero problem with this at all. Isn't there some top firm that pays travel costs when an associate goes to a city with another of their offices? At my firm there are visitor offices on a hotelling system and no one cares if you are using one of them. I have a colleague who was in a LTR between DC and NY with their partner and probably worked more out of the other office and their home office - no one cared.

When you say this, do you mean traveling for firm business, or even for personal visits if the associate is planning on working in that city's office during the visit?
