I was 3L direct-hired into a banking group at a v50 last year. I'm worried about exit options, and trying to gauge how the firm will react to wanting to switch groups after one year, when I was directly hired for that group.
Will that be rejected or met with hostility if I wanna switch to Capital Markets, Gen Corp, or M&A?
I don't want to piss anyone off, but I don't want to doom my career either. Would prefer not to lateral.

Re: Switching groups as a 3L direct hire
Depends on the relative strength of the practice groups, but if, for example, you did this at a place where the M&A team already gets most of the new hires and the credit/capm groups really have to scrounge for new bodies, this would go down badly.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 11:17 amI was 3L direct-hired into a banking group at a v50 last year. My anecdotal experience is one of our 3L hires just tried to do this and was met with a pretty "wtf" response by our group, and as the hire's preferred group works with us closely, they didn't want to compound the problem so didn't go to bat for the new guy.

What was the end result for this individual? Just stayed in original group? Had to leave the firm?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 1:25 pmDepends on the relative strength of the practice groups, but if, for example, you did this at a place where the M&A team already gets most of the new hires and the credit/capm groups really have to scrounge for new bodies, this would go down badly.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 11:17 amI was 3L direct-hired into a banking group at a v50 last year. Re: Switching groups as a 3L direct hire
They're still with our group, but it was made abundantly clear to them that our group wouldn't permit an intergroup transfer barring extenuating circumstances. They're barely a year into practice so I don't think this is dooming them or anything but it was received really badly and the other group closed ranks with our group extremely quickly on the point.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 8:57 pmWhat was the end result for this individual?
