Class Action Plaintiff's "Boutique" vs Mid-sized ID/WC

Post by argarg932 » Thu Sep 30, 2021 11:20 am

1st yr associate

The former (my current firm) claims to be a boutique, but the salary is like 130% of the normal PI firms in my area (75K + bonus), so I think it's a self-claimed boutique-ness. The latter (it approached me) is a solid mid-sized ID/WC. The latter pays a 95k + bonus. Both firms have great benefits. For the commenters here, both are obviously shit-laws. But they are my only options for now anyway. Should I leave?

My biggest dissatisfaction with thecurrent firm is a very uneven flow of work. On some days, I am kept busy. Some days... so jobless that I spend the whole day hanging out with my coworkers. Not complaining about the work-life balance, but I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to spend my early legal career with "lifestyle". The second dissatisfaction is its location - which I can live with, but not for long. The WC/ID firm is in a more bustling, young area. The third dissatisfaction is not getting hands-on trial experiences. It only does class actions. Things move really slowly, and I won't be in any form of hearing until late 2022.

The only fear of moving to the ID/WC firm is being a WC attorney for the rest of my life. Although the firm brands itself as ID/WC mix, its workload is primarily WC. Honestly I'm not bad with doing boring and repetitive work as long as it's stable, but I'm not sure how bad WC is...

Not sure I completely understood everything in OP, but here’s some perspective.

I have my own firm now after six years in biglaw. I would have loved to get class experience then immediately start my own firm. You can make bank.

And it’s not all that hard; there are just some things that you won’t know unless your taught, which is why I’m trying to cocounsel a few of these cases to figure it out.

My friend is doing it and they are doing much better than I. If you have any thoughts of being your own boss which is really the only way to make biglaw money in small law, then stick at the plaintiffs shop.

Regarding the ID shop, unless you do employment, your exits are going to be limited anyway.
