Skadden's hiring 3Ls to do work part time?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Sep 28, 2021 12:26 pm

I hear rumblings that the Skadden NY litigation group has hired a stable of current 3Ls to remotely churn doc review on a part time basis. Same for the corporate groups and diligence, etc.

This is pretty common for NY BL — typically in the $90-100/hour range

Kirkland has done this for at least the last five years.

What the...I had no idea. How do these people even get hired? Not through the normal 3L OCI process I'm assuming? What schools do they tend to come from?

From the folks I've seen do this, they're generally 2L summers and are either asked to work during 3L or ask to do so.

At my firm at least they are called “student associates.” We don’t use them for doc review though, we generally use them for patent prosecution, and tend to hire former examiners.

I'm on the 3L work list now (2L Summer, coming back next fall) and the rate is $120/hr these days.

Damn, that's $62,400 annually if you work 10 hours a week. I'd work under that model now as a current associate if I only had to work 10 hours a week lol.

Lol I totally misunderstood the original post then. I thought y’all were saying these firms hire 3Ls for post-graduation part-time gigs where they only get to do doc review and was thoroughly shocked 😂. Thanks for clarifying haha

Does anyone know how the firm picks 3Ls for this work? I know a handful of 3L classmates who volunteered but were not chosen. Given how busy the firm is, that surprises me. Is being chosen for 3L work a positive sign of your performance over the summer, or is that reading too much into the tea leaves?

Can’t speak to Skadden specifically, but in my experience this is more about need than it is about the firm being “wowed” by your summer performance.

I think $120 is Latham rate, S&C is $75/hour; KE and Cravath are both $100-105/hr. Not sure about Skadden
