Eastern District of California USAO - No clerkship and median grades?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Aug 25, 2021 12:14 pm

I have median grades from a T-14, work at a prestigious law firm, do some pro bono work that allows in court experience but no real trials, and no clerkship. Do I have any sort of shot?

Do you have any connections to the office? Know former AUSAs (not necessarily from that office) who can vouch for you? Can your references speak glowingly of you? How transferable is your pro bono? Do you have any relevant internship/public sector experience from law school that can help create a strong narrative for why you want the job?

You’ve IDed things that you don’t have that some candidates do, sure, but I don’t think you’re doomed such that you shouldn’t even try. Good cover letters that show you’ve really thought about what the job entails, why you want it, and why you’d be good at it can go a long way.
