NYC: Gibson Dunn or Simpson Thacher? Forum

Looking for responses about culture/experiences/vibes at each firm. Want to find somewhere where I’ll be happy and have the best career outlook (if thats possible lol).

We're going to need more specificity before we can give any real advice. What sorts of practices are you interested in? What personality are you looking for?

Generally speaking, I'd say STB over Gibson, but there are definitely fields where it would go the other way, and some personalities might prefer Gibson's more aggressive culture.

From the 2L perspective, I would go Gibson for litigation and Simpson Thacher for corporate. Obviously it’s a bit more complicated than that depending on what kind of law you want to practice specifically (funds / finance versus real estate versus M&A versus appellate versus securities versus insurance), but assuming you don’t have a strong sense of that, the above holds for most folks.

Culture wise Gibson NY is known as a little more social - heavier drinking during the summer, ect. That probably only matters on the margins.

In NY, for corporate Simpson, for litigation, Gibson. Not really close either way imo.
