Does this job exist? If so, what is it?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Aug 18, 2021 7:52 pm

What legal job, if any, fits the following criteria:

1) 40 hours a week
2) in Florida
3) achievable for someone who has been in jag for a few years after graduating middle class rank from a T2/3
4) six figures

(What about for the same criteria but high five figures?)

SEC Miami

Not easy to land, though

Edit: I should note that the profile you're presenting does not suggest a trajectory that leads to an SEC field office. But it's worth looking into.

I don’t think AUSA or SEC are exactly 40 hr/week jobs.

I mean neither are going to be biglaw, so if that’s what’s really meant, sure. And there will likely be weeks that are 40 hours. But they’re not like hard cutoffs at 40 hours.

A JAG who’s been doing criminal stuff (as opposed to, say, requisitions) may have a shot at an AUSA gig if they have good experience and connections. I can’t really see someone with that background landing at the SEC, at all.

(All that said, I’m no real help with the original question.)

The other commenters are on the right track (government) but their specific suggestions are going to be very difficult to get and would likely end up being over 40 hours a week. Local government would probably be the best route. I'd strongly suggest looking at positions in the city attorneys' offices in the major cities, which may start at 5 figures but are not super demanding and would be a great credential for being THE city attorney for a mid-size city down the line, which can pay pretty well into the six figures. State government is also an option if you don't mind being in Tallahassee.

Not sure how realistic this is for someone with your background, but look into law school career offices. Pay is ~90k at UF.

In regards to state government, from the job vacancies I’ve seen on their website, they’re never six figures, even being mid-5 for the ones available for my experience level. I know that the total compensation will be higher than that and there’s the pension factor, but these numbers are much lower than numbers in jag or other federal agencies. Do you happen to know what kind of salary progression there is for these types of jobs? How long does it take for them to get up into the sixes, if they ever do? Thanks
