Hunton, McGuireWoods or Troutman? In a situation to make the decision between these firms. Generally interested in litigation. Thanks!

Congrats on the great offers. These are the three best big firms in town and all have strong litigation practices. Hunton & McGuireWoods have a few more Chambers Band 1 rankings in litigation areas than Troutman, but Troutman and Hunton pay more than McGuireWoods (and McGuireWoods was the only one of the three to not pay special COVID bonuses to associates).

If you want to get paid top dollar, it should be between Hunton & Troutman. But if you got the best vibe from McGuireWoods, choosing them, especially in Richmond, would not be an unreasonable choice at all. Go with your gut.

Can’t go wrong with any of these, although Id personally go Hunton or McGuire given that both are Richmond centered firms. McGuire has a stellar reputation in litigation- in fact I think they take one of the highest number of SCOTUS clerks of large firms across the whole country. Hunton is also very strong in litigation and across practice areas.

That said, I wouldn’t discount the money part of the equation. Hunton paid COVID bonuses and, given that it now matches Cravath salary and bonuses in all its offices, seems like it’s the most committed to paying top dollar. Seems to be a similar case with Troutman but I’m not as familiar with their bonus situation. I don’t know this with any certainty, but think McGuire pays less in Richmond than major markets, which themselves may not be at Cravath.
