Will 1L summer elsewhere in California show sufficient interest for LA biglaw the next summer

Post by haldren2198 » Sun Aug 15, 2021 9:34 pm

I asked about LA biglaw on here a while back and everyone there was very insistent that I must do my 1L summer in LA if I want a 2L SA there. The problem is that my school is across the country and I would really rather not pay rent in LA for three months if it's avoidable.

I'm from a town in the northern part of SoCal (like Ventura/SB/SLO counties area) and went to UCLA for undergrad. I'm at a T14 that doesn't send many students to LA, but I feel like my background demonstrates that it's the natural place for me to go after law school.

Does anybody with experience in the LA market have any insight? I could probably get an internship around my hometown with a PD/DA office or with a superior court judge. I'd really love to live at home and spend time with family for a few months if possible, but I don't know whether it'll be problematic that I can't make coffee appointments or whatever with LA associates regularly.

I'm not from California, but would assume that this would be fine. Your connections seem sufficient.
I think you wouldn't have trouble convincing them of your ties and hopes to stay. Just make sure to do 2L SA or 2L summer work there.
