You'll need to define each of "casual" and "biglaw".

Basically no market-paying NYC firm where you can wear your bro tank on a Tuesday.

Uhhhh during the pandemic when the office was a ghost town yes, otherwise no I have never seen someone in a tee shirt other than particular circumstances like swinging by the office before getting on a plane. We do business casual, and people go real casual on Fridays but almost always still a collar (polos, sweaters all good).

Don’t know any of the NY offices specifically, but the tech firms Cooley, Gunderson, WSGR, Goodwin, Fenwick tend to be pretty casual. At the Boston offices of one of these firms and a jeans and a long sleeve-tee were totally fine pre-pandemic.

Latham NY is pretty lax with the dress code but can be group dependent. You’re obviously expected to keep a suit handy if needed for client meetings, but pre-covid people wore jeans regularly and some often wore nice sneakers on Fridays. As an extreme example, there is one partner who regularly wears workout clothes around the office.

Having been in the office a few times since Covid started, everyone dresses way more down and most people are wearing jeans, polos, and sneakers.

I find people at top law firms are usually more polished, in that they spend more on their appearance and put more effort and money into the details/fit. Obviously, not everyone fits the mold but what associates wore as business casual at Latham NY looked better than what a lot of business associates were wearing at the nearby business formal firms.

What do you mean? Do you mean lower-ranked business formal firms? Because my understanding is that at least some top law firms are business formal.

He means that Latham associates are more "casual" as in they are may not be wearing suits and ties, but they look presentable. Wearing stylish and clean-cut polo, slacks and loafers is different than wearing gym clothes. FWIW, I'm a Latham associate, and pre-pandemic people generally wore business casual (button-down tucked into slacks).

Cravath associate: the dress code of “formal” was pretty loose to begin with pre-COVID but confirmed that it’s now officially business casual.
