King & Spalding NY vs. Skadden DE
Interested in transactional work. Skadden has a better reputation especially for corporate work and likely opens up more doors and exit opps. But NYC is a better location. Help! What would you do?

Skadden DE generally does a narrow range of work (lit, RX, etc.) so if you want to do more standard corporate work, maybe K&S is a better idea. Skadden NY (and a lot of their other offices too) is a corporate powerhouse as you mention, but their DE office is more of a satellite.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:16 amInterested in transactional work. Yeah I didn't know if I could maybe leverage my "in" with Skadden and get to the NY office by splitting the summer or maybe it is easier to lateral there as an associateAnonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:22 amSkadden DE generally does a narrow range of work (lit, RX, etc.) so if you want to do more standard corporate work, maybe K&S is a better idea. Just at a guess, you probably could transition to Skadden NY without too much trouble. Have you asked the firm about it? Given the current demand for associates in NY, you should probably just ask Skadden if you can go to NY instead.Hamilton51 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:28 amYeah I didn't know if I could maybe leverage my "in" with Skadden and get to the NY office by splitting the summer or maybe it is easier to lateral there as an associateAnonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:22 amSkadden DE generally does a narrow range of work (lit, RX, etc.) so if you want to do more standard corporate work, maybe K&S is a better idea. All things considered, it's probably harder to get a spot at Skadden Wilmington than it is Skadden NY. It's a much smaller office, and market pay in Wilmington is a pretty incredible value proposition. But obviously you should only go there if you're interested in living in that area and having a DE-centric practice, as mentioned above. I don't know that Skadden does much, if any general corporate practice out of DE.
Bottom line, just ask.

Most of this post is true. However, it's harder to lateral from a secondary market to NY. Usually it goes the other way.ExpOriental wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:42 amJust at a guess, you probably could transition to Skadden NY without too much trouble. Have you asked the firm about it?
